So U Locs – FAQ

Services I Offer

Hey, beautiful souls! I specialize in dreadlock artistry, including:

  • Natural dreadlock creations (new sets)

  • Full head maintenance

  • Partial maintenance

  • Braid-in temporary loc extensions (handmade with high-quality synthetic hair)

  • Handmade wool locs

  • Festival/event braids with color + décor

New Sets & Maintenance

  • New sets & maintenance: Yes! I do both — whether you’re starting your dread journey or keeping your current set thriving.

  • Time for new sets: 4–12 hours, depending on hair length, thickness, and desired look.

  • Hair length needed: 4–5 inches minimum; longer hair helps for extensions or dramatic styles.

  • Partial sets: Totally fine! You can do a few locs or accent locs instead of a full head.

  • Loc maturity: Tighter, solid “ropes” with fewer lumps and bumps; takes 6 months–3 years depending on hair.

  • Loc uniqueness: Every loc has its own personality — just like you. Imperfect is perfect here.

Extensions & Temporary Locs

  • Synthetic vs wool:

    • Synthetic: Quality hair fiber, versatile, temporary or long-term, can be braided, twisted, curled, etc.

    • Wool locs: Soft, textured, earthy, handcrafted, and resemble mature dreadlocks.

  • Braid-in temporary locs: Hand-made, customizable in color, length, and texture. Last 4–8 weeks.

  • Uses: Fullness, color, or trying locs without commitment.

  • Partial or accent locs: Absolutely!

  • Products for sale: Synthetic braid-ins, handmade wool locs, and custom textures/colors — online or in-studio.

  • A full head  generally requires  50-55 pieces.

Maintenance & Care

  • Maintenance time: 1–3 hours depending on hair length/ number of dreads.

  • Frequency: Every 1–3 months (varies by personal style).

  • Method: Crochet only — no wax, gel, or twisting.

  • Thickening: Locs “fatten up” over time.

  • Washing/swimming: Yes! Use the right shampoo, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely.

  • Products needed: None — just clean hair and my crochet hook.

  • Mold/mildew: Only if left wet too long. Proper drying prevents this. DO NOT SLEEP WITH WET LOCS

Prep & Styling

  • Appointment prep: Wash with clarifying shampoo 24–48 hours before, clean and dry hair, no oils, conditioners, or gels.

  • Detangling: Helpful but not required — I can work with tangles.

  • Thin/fine hair: Works! Sectioning adjustments may be needed; locs thicken over time.

  • Beads, wraps, charms: Yes! I can install, guide, or let you DIY. Safe as long as they fit well.

Color & Hair Services

  • I don’t offer coloring, but I can work on colored hair and advise on color-safe dread care.

  • Braid-ins are a great way to change your look without chemical damage.

Kids & Special Styles

  • Kids can get locs or festival braids if hair type, length, and comfort allow.

  • Festival/event braids: Colorful, dramatic, decorated styles (think EDC bubble braids) with hair, charms, and décor.

Pain & Comfort

  • I work gently and intentionally. Some tightness may occur, but breaks are always available. Most clients tolerate maintenance with minimal discomfort.
